{"id":"MAL-2026-16161","summary":"Malicious code in meraz-project-tracker (npm)","details":"\n---\n_-= Per source details. Do not edit below this line.=-_\n\n## Source: amazon-inspector (d3081e87039a0a1582330f353797d15ba12cdb1c17828ab2ee7224b7c1ac4809)\nOn `npm install`, the declared `postinstall` script (`bin/postinstall.js`) runs `trackProject()`, which collects the installer's hostname, OS username, platform/arch, Node version, consumer project name/version/path, git branch/commit and `remote.origin.url` (via `execSync` of `git` commands in the consumer project directory), and public IP with IP-derived geolocation, then POSTs the report to the hardcoded endpoint `https://project-tracker-mu-vert.vercel.app/api/telemetry`. On interactive/TTY installs, the postinstall additionally starts a loopback HTTP server and auto-opens the default browser to a page whose `DOMContentLoaded` handler calls `navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition` and forwards the precise lat/lon/accuracy to the same author endpoint. The behavior is opt-out only (`PROJECT_TRACKER_DISABLED`) and also fires in CI. Private git remote URLs and precise device GPS coordinates are shipped to a third-party server as a side effect of installation.\n\n## Source: ghsa-malware (e1a3c77d5bcaa115429f3dd8340c5ab055c399f7d240842ea8f57b60bcb8f4f2)\nAny computer that has this package installed or running should be considered fully compromised. All secrets and keys stored on that computer should be rotated immediately from a different computer. The package should be removed, but as full control of the computer may have been given to an outside entity, there is no guarantee that removing the package will remove all malicious software resulting from installing it.\n","aliases":["GHSA-54v8-j59m-366h"],"modified":"2026-09-15T16:31:19.510067367Z","published":"2026-09-14T14:49:59Z","database_specific":{"malicious-packages-origins":[{"modified_time":"2026-09-14T14:50:06Z","ranges":[{"type":"SEMVER","events":[{"introduced":"0"}]}],"sha256":"e1a3c77d5bcaa115429f3dd8340c5ab055c399f7d240842ea8f57b60bcb8f4f2","source":"ghsa-malware","id":"GHSA-54v8-j59m-366h","import_time":"2026-09-14T20:24:03.933768941Z"},{"sha256":"d3081e87039a0a1582330f353797d15ba12cdb1c17828ab2ee7224b7c1ac4809","source":"amazon-inspector","versions":["1.0.0"],"id":"IN-MAL-2026-020070","import_time":"2026-09-15T16:19:16.233898476Z","modified_time":"2026-09-15T15:56:18Z"}]},"references":[{"type":"ADVISORY","url":"https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-54v8-j59m-366h"},{"type":"PACKAGE","url":"https://www.npmjs.com/package/meraz-project-tracker/v/1.0.0"}],"affected":[{"package":{"name":"meraz-project-tracker","ecosystem":"npm","purl":"pkg:npm/meraz-project-tracker"},"ranges":[{"type":"SEMVER","events":[{"introduced":"0"}]}],"versions":["1.0.0"],"database_specific":{"cwes":[{"name":"Embedded Malicious Code","cweId":"CWE-506","description":"The product contains code that appears to be malicious in nature."},{"description":"The product contains code that appears to be malicious in nature.","name":"Embedded Malicious Code","cweId":"CWE-506"}],"indicators":{"evidence_files":[{"sha256":"78990db4a56834715d7054c445b5f36172ffcb19497a6e871d45ccbff8318b08","tlsh":"7451635984f9911873fb0393912f0838f43fe24e2d2cf6b5799c92891f8851de2639da","path":"src/index.js"},{"sha256":"2b5afaa89e9d9923ef17e180e2aaa4d373e3b55e62dd9e95fd0bd719c8dca227","tlsh":"d2e164af65b310225bf3e15767ab9b0532739007940aca257edd41504fc57a872e2bcc","path":"src/server.js"},{"sha256":"8cd3b961bb394c62b17980596e226779e15089ccee3479e1d95f0241bfce3ffb","tlsh":"5151f04992a88330ddd2291aab8e1c20735fd2537745b8f87c9d86817f1596051b3baa","path":"src/project-info.js"}]},"source":"https://github.com/ossf/malicious-packages/blob/main/osv/malicious/npm/meraz-project-tracker/MAL-2026-16161.json"}}],"schema_version":"1.9.0","credits":[{"name":"Amazon Inspector","contact":["inspector-research@amazon.com"],"type":"FINDER"}]}
