{"id":"MAL-2026-16070","summary":"Malicious code in @fyxzpediaa/baileys (npm)","details":"\n---\n_-= Per source details. On every WebSocket connection, socketConnect() reconstructs a URL from a char-code array (decoding to https://raw.githubusercontent.com/skyzopedia/NewsletterID/refs/heads/main/VIP_Push.json), fetches a JSON list from that mutable GitHub branch, and 200 seconds after connect iterates the list issuing authenticated `w:mex` queries with query_id 7871414976211147 (QueryIds.FOLLOW) against the installer's own WhatsApp session. A separate exported helper `generateMessageV` decodes a base64+XOR(key=23)-obfuscated string to a hardcoded `\u003cdigits\u003e@newsletter` JID and invokes the same FOLLOW query. The obfuscation of both the URL (char-code array) and the JID literal (base64+XOR) exists solely to hide these targets from source review; upstream Baileys does not contain this code path. The runtime dependency `@whiskeysockets/eslint-config` is also declared as a mutable GitHub tarball reference (`github:whiskeysockets/eslint-config`) rather than a pinned registry range, so `npm install` resolves it to whatever that repository's default branch currently contains. The covert action uses the installer's authenticated identity to gain reach for author-chosen newsletter IDs but does not exfiltrate credentials, install persistence, or execute remote code on the installer's host; the harm is loss of control over the installer's WhatsApp account actions, not machine compromise.\n","modified":"2026-09-09T19:45:05.433740797Z","published":"2026-09-09T04:53:03Z","database_specific":{"malicious-packages-origins":[{"versions":["8.1.2"],"id":"IN-MAL-2026-019837","import_time":"2026-09-09T05:18:18.143084419Z","modified_time":"2026-09-09T04:53:03Z","sha256":"0747ec3c1ce519798cac2e89f8ec1e1532d428355a13929f0176a11d77a2b175","source":"amazon-inspector"},{"sha256":"9ff72807bf4250ecb6a36c07a89cbc5e08677851a7035dfc12dffbda71840fda","source":"amazon-inspector","versions":["9.1.0"],"id":"IN-MAL-2026-019895","import_time":"2026-09-09T19:37:56.776675861Z","modified_time":"2026-09-09T19:20:51Z"}]},"references":[{"type":"PACKAGE","url":"https://www.npmjs.com/package/@fyxzpediaa/baileys/v/8.1.2"},{"type":"PACKAGE","url":"https://www.npmjs.com/package/@fyxzpediaa/baileys/v/9.1.0"}],"affected":[{"package":{"name":"@fyxzpediaa/baileys","ecosystem":"npm","purl":"pkg:npm/%40fyxzpediaa/baileys"},"versions":["8.1.2","9.1.0"],"database_specific":{"indicators":{"package_integrity":[{"filename":"baileys-8.1.2.tgz","hashes":{"sha512_sri":"sha512-NRAuY5wUXG1QJtJMq+vOBnSB9GItKvOPlSSrkIEKL5E7+D8cB2EJA+6V1T5V09WIA8Eqc79nNQXTBGrmeo5ing==","sha1":"83ba7b730451c891a0406402e4d1a8da8337db81"}}],"evidence_files":[{"tlsh":"ffd2b41b46f3053aab777476562b6021333580073a48dca57bac8254af8e778e6e77cc","path":"lib/Socket/socket.js","sha256":"ea57a6770cf2c246e27a5ffe85ffeb496624f9b1582868d5dff184fd6369a394"},{"path":"package.json","sha256":"569b105995687bff69ca53bcb7a3e557638ef05a9f824d2df5a8cec4483903d9","tlsh":"2051ef22cfaa4d3324da2589e8a54002756819e3ae14bc3c73e5427c8f4f25f13fa5ed"}]},"cwes":[{"cweId":"CWE-506","description":"The product contains code that appears to be malicious in nature.","name":"Embedded Malicious Code"},{"cweId":"CWE-506","description":"The product contains code that appears to be malicious in nature.","name":"Embedded Malicious Code"}],"source":"https://github.com/ossf/malicious-packages/blob/main/osv/malicious/npm/@fyxzpediaa/baileys/MAL-2026-16070.json"}}],"schema_version":"1.9.0","credits":[{"name":"Amazon Inspector","contact":["inspector-research@amazon.com"],"type":"FINDER"}]}
