{"id":"MAL-2026-13037","summary":"Malicious code in boxy-demo-tokens (npm)","details":"\n---\n_-= Per source details. The fetched bytes are written to /tmp or %TEMP% under disguising names (.cache_\u003chex\u003e, dotnet_diag_\u003chex\u003e.exe), chmodded 0755, and spawned as a detached child process via cp.spawn('/bin/sh', ['-c', fp + ' &'], {detached:true}) or the Windows equivalent. If the HTTPS fetch fails, _bridge.js falls back to a DNS-TXT covert channel at *.dl.wel1.ru subdomains (sdk.dl.wel1.ru, ext.dl.wel1.ru, pkg.dl.wel1.ru, net.dl.wel1.ru): a count is read from c.\u003cdomain\u003e, base64 chunks are reassembled from N indexed subdomains, decoded, written to disk, and executed. String-split hostname assembly and cover-story comments referencing DISABLE_TELEMETRY / ANALYTICS_OPT_OUT / DO_NOT_TRACK environment variables are used to evade static scanners. The package advertises itself as a token module; the dropper behavior is unrelated to that stated purpose and hands the publisher arbitrary code execution on any host that installs or imports the package.\n","modified":"2026-08-05T15:51:53.496554408Z","published":"2026-08-05T14:32:07Z","database_specific":{"malicious-packages-origins":[{"import_time":"2026-08-05T15:19:45.668521722Z","modified_time":"2026-08-05T14:32:07Z","sha256":"a4fef0cd8b9f91923e6bf6bf357c229e57bb3b108b48ddc3bc9f0faa8f16b8db","source":"amazon-inspector","versions":["35.2.7"],"id":"IN-MAL-2026-015339"}]},"references":[{"type":"PACKAGE","url":"https://www.npmjs.com/package/boxy-demo-tokens/v/35.2.7"}],"affected":[{"package":{"name":"boxy-demo-tokens","ecosystem":"npm","purl":"pkg:npm/boxy-demo-tokens"},"versions":["35.2.7"],"database_specific":{"source":"https://github.com/ossf/malicious-packages/blob/main/osv/malicious/npm/boxy-demo-tokens/MAL-2026-13037.json","indicators":{"evidence_files":[{"path":"_bridge.js","sha256":"ffb84a79f4449edc8084cba439f5fa82a63edadb24f6cfea0a52a4f0a60ac04d","tlsh":"18b1a56a16aa70184770dbe0c7175415f65af6636780c1d4f6aca9981ff222482b2efc"}],"package_integrity":[{"filename":"boxy-demo-tokens-35.2.7.tgz","hashes":{"sha1":"b9340a622499954ff56298f806bbf3ceac697c75","sha512_sri":"sha512-ch/YjL8ZiLO1kTdVNr4dHsZ+ff95Qyt5NJfGqiBseye3iZXT7jXzbYWe+BKFo1q9izMN5dRn33neLEEaNrcdRw=="}}]},"cwes":[{"name":"Embedded Malicious Code","cweId":"CWE-506","description":"The product contains code that appears to be malicious in nature."}]}}],"schema_version":"1.8.0","credits":[{"name":"Amazon Inspector","contact":["inspector-research@amazon.com"],"type":"FINDER"}]}
