{"id":"CVE-2026-44712","summary":"pam_usb: Shell injection via device UUID and username in pamusb-conf and pamusb-agent","details":"pam_usb provides hardware authentication for Linux using ordinary removable media. Prior to 0.8.7, a crafted UUID such as $(id\u003e/tmp/rce) in the config causes root RCE when pamusb-conf --reset-pads is run. A USB device with a crafted filesystem UUID (some controllers allow this) can inject the payload at --add-device time. Also, userName from the XML config is passed to os.system() in pamusb-agent, which invokes a shell. This vulnerability is fixed in 0.8.7.","aliases":["GHSA-jgv5-w6rm-7wxg"],"modified":"2026-07-08T08:13:30.284666055Z","published":"2026-05-27T20:24:23.131Z","database_specific":{"cwe_ids":["CWE-78","CWE-88"],"osv_generated_from":"https://github.com/CVEProject/cvelistV5/tree/main/cves/2026/44xxx/CVE-2026-44712.json","cna_assigner":"GitHub_M"},"references":[{"type":"ADVISORY","url":"https://github.com/CVEProject/cvelistV5/tree/main/cves/2026/44xxx/CVE-2026-44712.json"},{"type":"ADVISORY","url":"https://github.com/mcdope/pam_usb/security/advisories/GHSA-jgv5-w6rm-7wxg"},{"type":"ADVISORY","url":"https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-44712"}],"affected":[{"ranges":[{"type":"GIT","repo":"https://github.com/mcdope/pam_usb","events":[{"introduced":"0"},{"fixed":"987f4f6ddf0a8c75ddd5f05b19b863220efe9005"}],"database_specific":{"extracted_events":[{"introduced":"0"},{"fixed":"0.8.7"}],"source":"AFFECTED_FIELD"}}],"versions":["0.8.4","0.8.3","v0.8.0","0.7.3","0.7.2","0.7.1","v0.7.0","0.5.0"],"database_specific":{"source":"https://storage.googleapis.com/cve-osv-conversion/osv-output/CVE-2026-44712.json"}}],"schema_version":"1.7.5","severity":[{"type":"CVSS_V3","score":"CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H"}]}
