{"id":"CVE-2026-113779","summary":"pfSense REST API package Vulnerable to Privilege Escalation via Scoped HA Settings Sync Permission","details":"The pfSense REST API package is an unofficial, open-source REST and GraphQL API for pfSense CE and pfSense Plus firewalls. A privilege escalation vulnerability in pfSense-pkg-RESTAPI prior to version 2.9.0 allows authenticated accounts holding the dedicated settings sync permission to modify REST API configuration secrets. This enables a non-administrative user to elevate their privileges to a full administrator. pfSense-pkg-RESTAPI 2.9.0 patches the issue. Access to the HA settings sync endpoint now strictly requires full administrative privileges (`page-all`). The sub-administrative sync privilege has been removed in versions v2.9.0 and later. In addition to correcting the access control boundary, version 2.9.0 includes the following hardening measures: opt-in default and format and validation modernization. As a workaround, one may mitigate exposure by taking either or all of the following steps. Revoke Scoped Permissions: Remove the `api-v2-system-restapi-settings-sync-post` privilege from all non-administrative users. Apply ACLs: Configure REST API Access Control Lists (ACLs) and/or firewall rules to restrict access to API endpoints exclusively to trusted administrator and HA peer IP addresses.","aliases":["GHSA-8q8g-9f77-8g8g"],"modified":"2026-10-22T02:49:18.774808267Z","published":"2026-10-21T14:06:33.814Z","database_specific":{"osv_generated_from":"https://github.com/CVEProject/cvelistV5/tree/main/cves/2026/113xxx/CVE-2026-113779.json","cna_assigner":"GitHub_M","cwe_ids":["CWE-502"]},"references":[{"type":"ADVISORY","url":"https://github.com/CVEProject/cvelistV5/tree/main/cves/2026/113xxx/CVE-2026-113779.json"},{"type":"WEB","url":"https://github.com/pfrest/pfSense-pkg-RESTAPI/releases/tag/v2.9.0"},{"type":"ADVISORY","url":"https://github.com/pfrest/pfSense-pkg-RESTAPI/security/advisories/GHSA-8q8g-9f77-8g8g"},{"type":"ADVISORY","url":"https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-113779"}],"affected":[{"ranges":[{"type":"GIT","repo":"https://github.com/pfrest/pfsense-pkg-restapi","events":[{"introduced":"0"},{"fixed":"d040fa6fc9c925b4cb36c5b9c87bda4449aa6b9e"}],"database_specific":{"extracted_events":[{"strategy":"StringRangeExpression","range":[{"introduced":"0"},{"fixed":"2.9.0"}],"source":"AFFECTED_FIELD"},{"range":[{"fixed":"d040fa6fc9c925b4cb36c5b9c87bda4449aa6b9e"}],"source":"REFERENCES_TAG","original_tag":"v2.9.0"}]}}],"versions":["v2.8.4","v2.8.3","v2.8.2","v2.8.1","v2.8.0","v2.7.7","v2.7.6","v2.7.5","v2.7.4","v2.7.3","v2.7.2","v2.7.1","v2.7.0","v2.6.9","v2.6.8","v2.6.7","v2.6.6","v2.6.5","v2.6.4","v2.6.3","v2.6.2","v2.6.1","v2.6.0","v2.5.4","v2.5.3","v2.5.2","v2.5.1","v2.5.0","v2.4.2","v2.4.1","v2.4.0","v2.3.6","v2.3.5","v2.3.4","v2.3.3","v2.3.2","v2.3.1","v2.3.0","v2.2.2","v2.2.1","v2.2.0","v2.1.3","v2.1.2","v2.1.1","v2.1.0","v2.0.3","v2.0.2","v1.7.5","v2.0.1","v2.0.0","v1.7.4","v1.7.3","v1.7.2","v1.7.1","v1.7.0","v1.6.5","v1.6.4","v1.6.3","v1.6.2","v1.6.1","v1.6.0","v1.5.4","v1.5.3","v1.5.2","v1.5.1","v1.5.0","v1.4.3","v1.4.2","v1.4.1","v1.4.0","v1.3.5","v1.3.4","v1.3.3","v1.3.2","v1.3.1","v1.3.0","v1.2.4","v1.2.3","v1.2.2","v1.2.1","v1.2.0","v1.1.7","v1.1.6","v1.1.5","v1.1.4","v1.1.3","v1.1.2","v1.0.3","v1.1.1","v1.1.0","v1.0.2","v1.0.1","v1.0.0","v0.0.3","v0.0.2","v0.0.1"],"database_specific":{"source":"https://storage.googleapis.com/cve-osv-conversion/osv-output/CVE-2026-113779.json"}}],"schema_version":"1.9.0","severity":[{"type":"CVSS_V3","score":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H"}]}
