{"id":"CVE-2018-20167","details":"Terminology before 1.3.1 allows Remote Code Execution because popmedia is mishandled, as demonstrated by an unsafe \"cat README.md\" command when \\e}pn is used. A popmedia control sequence can allow the malicious execution of executable file formats registered in the X desktop share MIME types (/usr/share/applications). The control sequence defers unknown file types to the handle_unknown_media() function, which executes xdg-open against the filename specified in the sequence. The use of xdg-open for all unknown file types allows executable file formats with a registered shared MIME type to be executed. An attacker can achieve remote code execution by introducing an executable file and a plain text file containing the control sequence through a fake software project (e.g., in Git or a tarball). When the control sequence is rendered (such as with cat), the executable file will be run.","modified":"2026-07-08T05:52:55.117823508Z","published":"2018-12-17T05:29:00.957Z","database_specific":{"unresolved_ranges":[{"vendor_product":"enlightenment:terminology","cpes":["cpe:2.3:a:enlightenment:terminology:*:*:*:*:*:*:*:*"],"extracted_events":[{"fixed":"1.3.1"}],"source":"CPE_RANGE"}]},"references":[{"type":"ADVISORY","url":"https://www.enlightenment.org/news/2018-12-16-terminology-1.3.1"},{"type":"FIX","url":"https://phab.enlightenment.org/rTRM1ac204da9148e7bccb1b5f34b523e2094dfc39e2"},{"type":"EVIDENCE","url":"https://phab.enlightenment.org/T7504"}],"affected":[{"ranges":[{"type":"GIT","repo":"https://github.com/borisfaure/terminology","events":[{"introduced":"0"},{"fixed":"a01f9ba65beeced76062f6174bda3236784c0ab7"}],"database_specific":{"source":"DESCRIPTION","extracted_events":[{"introduced":"0"},{"fixed":"1.3.1"}]}}],"versions":["v1.3.0","v1.2.0","v1.1.0","v1.0.0","v0.9.0","v0.8.0","v0.7.0","v0.6.1","v0.6.0","v0.5.0","v0.4.0","v0.4.0-alpha4","v0.4.0-alpha3","v0.4.0-alpha1","v0.3.0","v0.2.0","v0.1.0"],"database_specific":{"source":"https://storage.googleapis.com/cve-osv-conversion/osv-output/CVE-2018-20167.json"}}],"schema_version":"1.7.5","severity":[{"type":"CVSS_V3","score":"CVSS:3.0/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H"}]}
